Dr. Allan Third is a member of the Blockchain research group in the Knowledge Media Institute at the UK’s Open University. This group is exploring the potential use case of distributed ledgers for adult, higher and informal education, to store and verify educational achievements, credentials, portfolios and reputation. Dr Third is leading research into the connections and interoperability between blockchains and the Semantic Web, particularly Linked Data, for education as well as other areas such as scientific and medical data integrity. He is currently leading work packages in the H2020 projects SlideWiki (collaborative authoring of Open Educational Resources) and Up2U (bridging the gap between secondary and higher education). His previous work includes research on eHealth (EU FP7 “CARRE” and “VPH-Share”, Cancer Research UK “COSSAC”) and natural language generation and semantics (EPSRC “SWAT” and “FoGI”). He has published in highly-ranked conferences (including COLING,INLG and ISWC) and journals (e.g., the Notre-Dame Journal of Formal Logic), and edited a special issue of the philosophy journal Synthese.
